The original United Kingdom Clan Scott Society had to be closed down some time ago as it was no longer financially viable. Since then, its website was maintained on a purely voluntary basis. Unfortunately this is no longer sustainable.

Obituary: Jane, Dowager Duchess of Buccleuch

Reported in The Scotsman newspaper recently:

'Jane, the Dowager Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry [...] Died 18 April [...] The Buccleuch family were one of the most renowned in Scotland. The Lordship of Scott of Buccleuch had been created in 1606, and the earldom in 1619 for the second Lord.'

It just occurred to me that next March will be the centenary of Captain Scott's untimely death. Opinions of his Antarctic expeditions and leadership have varied over the years but this seems well worth noting here.

According to a recent article in The Scotsman newspaper, Peter Scott 'discovered an interest in wildlife because his Antarctic explorer father believed it was "better than games"'. Now a new wetland walk is to be created in his memory.

According to an article in Timesonline, the popular UK broadcaster Selina Scott bought a farmhouse on the island of Majorca 'to escape the media rat race' and 'it's taken 20 years of tears and toil to find a happy ending'. It's an interesting story:

We've received the following sad notice from David Scott, of the Clan Scott Society [USA]:

'It is with great sadness that I write the news of the passing of a long-cherished correspondent and valued Honourary Member of the Clan Scott Society.

Douglas Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott, OBE, was born on 21 June 1930 and died 30 June 2010, aged 80, after a sudden illness. A Borderer on both sides of his family, he was the son of Colonel Claud Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott and Lady Victoria Doris Rachel Haig, daughter of Field Marshal Earl Haig, Commander of the British Armies in France in WWI. Douglas's grandfather was Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th son of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch (and an ancestor of Sarah Duchess of York). As a child, Douglas lived throughout WWII at Drumlanrig Castle.He married, firstly, Bridget Elizabeth George, daughter of Air Vice-Marshal Sir Robert Allingham George, on 12 October 1954. He married, secondly, Daphne Maureen Shortt, daughter of Dr. Cyril de Vere Shortt, in 1977. He married, thirdly, Monica Joan Hudson, daughter of James Edward Hudson, on 20 October 2005.He was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Irish Guards. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of South Australia. He was invested as an Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).After eight years as a regular soldier, he had a successful career in the engineering industry. This was followed by nearly nine years as CEO of the Cancer Charity, Macmillan Cancer Relief. During all these years, he has painted regularly but as a hobby under the tutelage of several well-known painters, notably his uncle, Lord Haig, an accomplished Scottish artist.He is survived by his wife, Monica, his children Emily Montagu Douglas Scott and Lucy Rosemary Montagu Douglas Scott, and his stepchildren Penny, Simon, and Olivia. His son, Adam Montagu Douglas Scott, died in 1969. His sister, Henrietta Montagu Douglas Scott, preceded him in death in 2008. The funeral was private.'

The Chief of Clan Scott, the Duke of Buccleuch, will host the first gathering of Clan Scott Societies on September 24 – 27, 2009. The Gathering, the first Clan Scott gathering ever held in the Borders, will have international appeal and is an official Homecoming Scotland 2009 event as announced by the First Minister of the Scottish Parliament, Alex Salmond. Last week we celebrated over a decade of guests signing the Scott visitors' book. Recently there seem to have been quite a few visitors with academic email addresses in the US and UK.

Does this suggest anything about Scotts in general?

I thought it might be interesting to look back at the original Scott visitors' book entries for a decade ago to see how much has changed. This guestbook can still be viewed online at the address given below.

In May 1998 most of our visitors were from the USA. Many still are, ten years on; but we also regularly receive entries from all over the world!

My name is Alexander Andrew Ronaldson Scott and I'm a direct descendant of Thomas Scott and his wife Janet Johnstone/Scott from Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland and other Scott kin of the Glasgow / Lanarkshire and Blantrye area. Thomas lived most of his life in Stonehouse, a village of mostly hand loom weavers of the period around 1800. Thomas is mentioned in Robert Naismith’s book: Stonehouse: Historical and Traditional 1885. Thomas Scott and Janet Johnstone are buried in the old kirkyard in Stonehouse and I shall soon make a pilgrimage there to rededicate the family headstone. I have been researching very passionately since 2001; working to publish a book using over 200 historical documents to back up what used to be only, with little exception, family tradition. A quick rundown on my Scott side looks like this: 1. Thomas Scott, carpenter of Bellshill (born approximately 1745) 2. Thomas Scott (Thomas of Bellshill’s son) married Janet Johnstone (they had 8 children)Thomas Jr, Marion Scott/Shearer, William Scott, John Scott, Janet Scott, Margaret Scott/Naismith, Janet Elliot Scott and Andrew Scott. 3. Andrew Scott (married twice) First Marriage to Elizabeth Osborne/Scott in 1848. (they had 4 children. Thomas Scott, Agnes Scott/Brown, Mary Scott/McDonald, Janet Scott who died age 3. Andrew’s 2nd marriage was to Helen Ronaldson/Scott in 1862. (they had 2 children. Alexander Scott, and Janet Polson Scott who, too, died young at age 7). 4. Alexander Scott (Andrew’s son) married Mary McChesney/Scott in 1892. (they had 3 children and the entire family moved from Scotland to Canada and then into Michigan of the USA. The children were Andrew Scott, Alexander Scott jr, Helen “Nellie” Scott). 5. Andrew Scott (son of Alexander) married Alice Cock/Scott in 1923. Andrew is my paternal great grandfather. I hope this information is helpful for anyone looking for Scotts of Lanarkshire Scotland and is an aid to beginners for simple research tips in general. Google is amazing with patience and a little luck. I would like to note that my research would not have been possible without the care and preservation by past/present family members and new found friends of our family. Andrew’s brother and sister both made their own pilgrimage to Stonehouse in 1954 gathering what information they could without the use of modern technology/internet. Mr. John Young - Stonehouse historian, Heather Ibbotson of Ontario Canada, Reverend Andrew Jamieson Scott-Branagan of Australia, Scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the use of their endless catalogs of Scottish historical documents, and of course my own Mother and Father who have encouraged and aided in my studies. Mom's side = Setla, Dashkevicz, Bochnia, Scioma. Dad's side = Chiefly Scott. But also includes Van Wagoner, Gierman, Lang, Kelleghan, Cock, McChesney, Johnstone, Osborne, Ronaldson, Naismith, Shearer, Polson, Thomson, Walker, Jamieson, Branagan, Pionk, Tillman, Kessel, Brown, Caldwell, Johnston, and McDonald.
